Maureen Rush, Board President of the nonprofit Philadelphia Police Foundation and Vice President for Public Safety and Superintendent of Police at the University of Pennsylvania, presented a check on June 3rd, 2013 for $84,780 to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey to fund the completion of recording equipment, installation and soundproofing at investigative interrogation rooms at the department's six Detective Divisions and the Special Victims Unit. The Police Department previously installed similar equipment at the Homicide Unit at Police Headquarters.
The Foundation's funding completes Commissioner Ramsey's commitment to install interrogation video equipment in the Department's Homicide Unit, and at every Detective Division in the city. Funding of the electronic recording systems is a strategic funding objective in the Foundation's Case for Support 2013-14,
and consistent with the Foundation's mission to fund equipment, training and programs for the police department that are not included in the Philadelphia Police Department's operating budget.
The $84,780 is the sum total of donations to the Foundation from businesses, foundations and the public; a grant from Macy's; and a contribution from Tyco Integrated Security, a leading national Security Integrator.
"The establishment of electronic recording systems in interrogation rooms was among the key needs that Commissioner Ramsey discussed with the Foundation in the creation of our Case for Support. We are very pleased that our public/private partnership with the Police Department now has successfully funded this important objective," Rush said.
Shane Meenan, Tyco's Area General Manager, Advanced Services, and Larry Sechuk, Macy's Vice President, Loss Prevention Special Operations and Law Enforcement Outreach, will represent their companies.
